This is an advertisement for linoleum. The word linoleum comes from the Latin words for flax or linseed 'linum', and oil 'oleum', from which two materials it is made. Linoleum was first patented in 1845 and was a popular choice for floor coverings in kitchens and bathrooms right up until the 1960s. It was water resistant, easy to clean and beautiful to look at. Patterns with intricate designs and bright colours could be printed on lino, ensuring that floors looked exciting and fresh. It was also affordable and quickly became popular with all classes.
