This is an advertisement for Blue Ribbon Army Tea. In 1885 the average working class family spent about a quarter of their total income on alcohol, and there were frequently voiced fears that many were 'drinking themselves to death'. Working and living conditions were tough and people drank considerable volumes of alcohol to 'escape' from their desolate everyday lives. It is interesting to see that this advert for Blue Ribbon Tea claims that it is 'A perfect substitute for alcoholic drink'. I wonder how many workers would have agreed with that! Evanion has written on this advert 'Oct 18th 82', this was the day he collected it.
