Rubber was developed in the 1840s. In America, it was patented by Charles Goodyear; while, around the same time in England, Thomas Hancock was patenting his 'Vulcanised Rubber'. This new material revolutionised transport and waterproofing. The Olympia Theatre, advertised on this leaflet, was originally designed as an alternative venue for the Royal Tournament, which had previously been held at the Royal Agricultural Hall.
