Advert For Drogan's Mayonaise Sandwich
Printer: Carter, A.
Medium: Print on paper
This leaflet is advertising Drogan's food for sale at the Canterbury theatre. Music Halls and Theatres in the 19th century were exciting and fashionable places to be. Initially halls had been very different, chairs were arranged around tables and food and drink was served from a bar at the side, the stage was not the main feature of the hall. As the performers became more specialised and more popular, theatre managers realised that they could fit more people into auditoriums (and therefore make more money!) if they removed the tables and kept food and drink in a separate room. Theatres in the late 1880s and 90s look much as they do today and just as now, snack foods like sandwiches were popular refreshments whilst watching performers.
