Before the 1850s, the annual consumption of tobacco in Britain was about two pounds (or four kilos) per person, but by the end of the century people were smoking more than twice that amount. It was not thought polite for refined women to smoke at this time and gentlemen would often retire to a smoking room after dinner to avoid offending their sensibilities.
