In 19th century Britain, horses were working animals in town and country alike. For the poorer tradesman or cab-driver, the loss of a horse could mean the loss of livelihood, and this would have left many families destitute. As a result, great care was taken to ensure that horses were healthy and were worked using only the best of equipment, such as this collar.
