Winemakers have always needed an inexpensive method of sealing their bottles and preserving their wine. Cork proved to be a perfect material and the first corkscrew was used in the 17th century. The original design based on a device used for withdrawing a charge from a gun barrel. Since then there have been thousands of variations. This one used a patented leverage handle, and could draw "the hardest Cork without without the slightest difficulty."
