H. Poole, waste paper dealer, is advertised on this leaflet as trading from a small cottage in Portsmouth Street, off the South West corner of Lincoln's Inn Fields. This building dates back to the 16th century, making it the oldest shop in London. It is believed to have been the inspiration for Charles Dickens’ novel ‘The Old Curiosity Shop’, Dickens knew the area well and would have shopped in the Care Market, which was where the shop stood. Today the shop is a listed building, for a while it was used to sell antiques however at the moment it is empty.
