Advert for Reckitt's Starch
Medium: Print on paper
Isaac Reckitt was born in Wainfleet in 1792 to a large wool farming family. He was an ambitious man and with his older brothers ran a milling business in Boston, Yorkshire. Isaac and his wife then ran a corn business in Nottingham but this collapsed under mounting debts and they were forced to move again.
They took over a small starch making factory in Hull and founded Rickett & Sons. The business prospered: in 1851 they employed 51 people but by 1861 this had increased to 210, of which a large proportion were women.
