Advert For Manby's Cleansing Crystal
Medium: Print on paper
Many attempts have been made to relieve the domestic drudgery of the 19th century. Doing the laundry was the most difficult and laborious of all domestic chores at this time. Clothes were first soaked in water overnight, the following day they were scrubbed with soaps like Manby’s cleansing crystals, then they were rinsed two or three times to remove the soap and put through the mangle to remove excess water. The clean laundry was then hung out to dry. Throughout the 1880s and 90s more soaps and cleaning products like Manby’s, were introduced to help make the job of washing easier.
