Advert for the Universal Carpet Sweeper
Printer: Davis, John H
Medium: Print on paper
At the time of their invention, carpet sweepers such as this were billed as perhaps the greatest labour-saving devices of all time. Melville Bissell patented the first carpet sweeper in America in the 1870s and introduced it to Britain in 1889. Records suggest that the first sweeper was sold on the first of May that year, to a Mr Himram Waddington, a joiner and builder from Accrington. Sweepers revolutionised domestic cleaning and Queen Victoria insisted that her palaces were swept with them every day.
