This is an advertisement for 'Kilvert's Lard', a well known brand of cooking lard. The lard was created by Samuel Kilvert, who lived in Sale in Cheshire. It is said that it was Sir Ranulph Livingstone who introduced the idea of lard to Britain. In 1841 whilst in Egypt he discovered some hieroglyphics showing the fat of a pig being used for cooking. He told James Barrington Burberry who experimented for several years until he perfected his mixture. The name Lard was allegedly taken from Burberry’s chubby wife Lardene.
