Tobacco was readily available in the 1800s. It was taken in a variety of methods including pipe smoking, taking snuff, smoking cigars, and by the end of the 19th century, cigarettes. Smoking was such an important feature of life during the Victorian period that it frequently appeared in popular culture, for example Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes often solved crimes with the help of ash on the floor or a smoking pipe. Smoking even influenced clothing; smoking jackets were popular with middle and upper class gentlemen.
