British people consumed £1/2 million worth of patent medicines in 1850 and by 1900 the figure was more like £4 million. This widespread dependence on medicine is an indication of the general inadequacies of the medical profession of the time. Many pills and mixtures claimed to be 'Cure Alls', claiming to ease a range of illnesses from shortness of breath and headaches to aching muscles and nervous disorders.
