The use of spectacles to correct eyesight allegedly dates from as early as the 13th century. However they did not become really common in Europe until the 19th century. Even then, these spectacles were usually small magnifying glasses and people struggled to keep them on their faces. For a long time, a piece of ribbon was tied to each arm of the spectacles and then tied at the back of the head. Edward Scarlett perfected the rigid frames that we still wear today.
