Gin palaces and taverns were widespread in the streets of 19th Century Britain and much of the weekly wages of the working classes was spent on drinking. The growth of towns and cities made the problem of drunkenness more obvious and ‘The Temperance Movement’ advocated a lifestyle free from alcohol. For the first time there were safe alternatives to alcohol, water supplies were cleaner and firms such as F. Allen & Son, began to produce drinks like cocoa. The illustration on this advert, compares the lifestyles of two families; it is the family leading a temperate lifestyle that are prospering.
