Advert For F. Messent & Co. Hosiers, Glovers & Outfitters
Medium: Print on paper
Hosiers and outfitters stores usually occupied prominent locations on high streets. Hosiers were thought of as higher class enterprises and were used by gentlemen looking for good quality accessories that they would not have been able to purchase in the more middle class department stores. Men shopping in the 19th century preferred to use small stores specialising in particular garments so that they would not have to be embarrassed looking at women’s undergarments. Hosiery stores stocked a range of men’s underwear as well as gloves, ties, scarves, handkerchiefs, shirt collars and cuffs, belts, cuff links and braces.
