This leaflet is advertising a sale of 'valuable and elegant household furniture and electroplate cutlery’. After the 1851 Great Exhibition electroplating was the main process for the cutlery industry. Electroplating creates a thin layer of pure silver covering the metal that the item is made from. Because the cutlery is plated rather than being made from silver it means they are much more affordable, and many items were electroplated, from cutlery and serving dishes to cake baskets and candlesticks.
