The bonnet was one of the most fashionable women's hats in Britain throughout the 19th century. It changed in size, style and material as the era progressed, but never really lost popularity.

Towards the end of the century in particular, many hats were bought readymade, with accessories and trimming such as feathers, dried flowers and lace. Decorative items could also be bought separately.
