Many working class families could not afford and did not have the space for large pieces of furniture for their homes. Often only a bed, sideboard, table and some chairs were the only items in a house.
To demonstrate their wealth to visitors, upper and middle class families bought as many pieces of furniture as they could, and rooms were often crammed with decorative as well as useful objects.
