Many housewives loathed laundry work and if they were wealthy enough would take their clothes to a laundrette or washerwoman, like the one featured on this advertisement. In some establishments the laundress would call at the house to collect any dirty clothes and would return them cleaned and ironed within a few days and in others servants would take bundles of dirty clothes to the laundry works and would collect them at an appointed time. Very wealthy families had their own laundry rooms and the working classes did their own laundry in communal wash houses.
