The late 19th century was the first time that retail outlets had used a variety of different mediums to advertise their stores. Before this time advertisements were placed in newspapers and periodicals on a weekly or monthly basis. These were usually small, text only announcements of the opening times and the store's specialities, but with the scientific developments of the period the printing process became faster and cheaper than before and so the production of printed materials like leaflets and posters increased.
