The 19th century witnessed a progressive growth in social awareness, with the middle and upper classes becoming increasingly aware that many of the working classes were living in terrible conditions with very little money. Philanthropists and reformers established benefit societies and charities like the Hospital Saturday Fund to help alleviate some of the hardships.
