The ceremony of confirmation is an important one for children as they confirm membership in the church, both Catholics and members of the Church of England go through this process. As it was a public ceremony the child's outfit was also very important and significant sums could be spent on white dresses for girls and light suits for the boys. Now confirmation is usually during the teenage years but in the 19th century confirmation was completed between the ages of 7 and 12.
