The first restaurants to offer Indian food and curries were dockside coffee houses, which had a clientele of merchants and sailors, many of whom had spent time in the East. Indeed, many Indian or Bengali sailors decided to stay in England and opened small community restaurants that served their indigenous food. These quickly grew in popularity and size.
