Many societies like this Provident Association were set up in the 19th century to provide support for members and their families in times of unemployment, sickness or death. The president of this society was Samuel Morley, Member of Parliament for Nottingham, who was also an eminent textile manufacturer and committed temperance worker. Campaigning in parliament for better working conditions and higher pay for employees, he led by example in his own factories.
