The 19th century is often thought of as a very pious age, however it was actually a period of doubt and loss of faith for many people. Humanist thinking developed rapidly at this time because it was closely associated with new scientific thinking, discoveries made by scientists like Darwin encouraged people to look towards science rather than religion to explain life and the reasons for their existence. Many new religious movements like the one advertised by Charles Whitmore Stokes in this leaflet, grew up at this time in response to the more questioning and searching minds of the Victorians.
