The invention of lithography, a printing process based on the chemical principal that grease and water do not mix, and the development of more powerful and more sophisticated printing presses combined to make printing a more affordable medium. Books and stationary ceased to be the preserve of the wealthy during the 19th century and penny novels, comics and newspapers as well as leaflets and illustrations became available to everyone.
