Advert for Wilcocke's Music Warehouse
Medium: Print on paper
The invention of the upright piano in the 19th century allowed many middle-class families to host their own musical entertainments at home. The general interest in piano and dance music was enormous and sheet music was produced at an astounding rate, with some writers claiming to have produced thousands of songs. Specialist music shops spread across cities throughout Britain, and it was estimated that there were over 100 in London alone. The windows of the shops were festooned with beautifully illustrated music sheet covers.
