Advert for the Jubilee Photo Company
Medium: Print on paper
This Jubilee Photo Company flyer advertises its cabinet photographs and 'cartes de visites'. More often known in England as calling cards, these 'cartes' featured small mounted photographs of the caller, and were introduced in 1866.
Cabinet photographs were larger images. Initially, they tended to be pictures of landscapes, before they were reoriented for portraiture. The majority of the photographs at this time were albumen prints, but by the end of the century other types of photographic paper - most notably, platinum-printing paper - were used.
