The proprietor advertising his dinning rooms on this leaflet is promoting the sandwiches that he sold. Sandwiches were very popular during the 19th century. The idea of putting meat between 2 slices of bread originated with John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich. He was an addictive gambler who hated to leave a game to go to eat a formal dinner. He asked his cook to prepare a nutritious meal that he could eat quickly and that would leave one hand free to play cards. The rest as they say, is history!
