By the 1800s, tea rivalled beer in popularity, even amongst the poor. It was a hot item to warm them after their often cold meals, and boiling the water made it a safe drink. Gladstone made this famous quote about tea,
“If you are cold, tea will warm you. If you are heated, it will cool you. If you are depressed it will cheer you. If you are excited it will calm you.”
