Advert for William James Pitt, newsagents
Medium: Print on paper
During the 19th century, the literate proportion of the population grew steadily. With the development of fast and cost-efficient printing presses, more and more periodicals, magazines and newspapers were produced to meet the increased demand for reading matter. The improved railway system allowed the national distribution of magazines and newspapers for the first time.
Pitt's newsagents shop sold the usual daily newspapers and periodicals, but this advert also promotes his delivery service, stocks of stationery and his printing and binding service.
