This is an advert from 1887, for a sale of jewellery salvaged from a fire. In the middle of the 19th century, the discreet and delicate jewellery popular in the 18th century was gradually replaced by a trend for bold, bright matching necklace-and-earring sets. The different styles available ranged from the Gothic and the Classical to Chinese-inspired designs. The widespread importing from British colonies of such materials as diamonds, gold and turquoise made designers much more adventurous.
