In the 19th century chemical dyes were introduced that revolutionised the textile printing industry. There was a greater understanding of the science of chemistry and there were many discoveries that enabled printers to use further colours and advanced technology. In 1856 the chemist William Perkin discovered anililne purple or mauveine and once the process was understood many more colours could be developed, by 1902 almost 700 synthetic colours were available.
