Shoe fashions changed considerably during the 19th century. During the early 1800’s flat shoes and satin slippers were popular. These were delicate shoes costing 4 or 5 shillings and because they only lasted only a month or 2 they were an expensive luxury for the very wealthy. In the middle of the century with the development of sewing machines and other equipment shoes similar to plimsolls were made from materials like cotton and leather. The boot was also very fashionable for women at this time because the fashion for wearing crinolines meant that the ankle was exposed.
