Britain's landscape in the early 19th century was radically different from that of a century before. A huge number of significant structural building projects, such as canals, bridges and towers had been completed, transforming the face of the nation. As late as 1850, however, only Glasgow University and London University offered degrees in engineering; most engineers were trained through the apprentice method with an individual firm.
