The popularity of eggs increased in the 19th century, when the development of the railways made possible the speedy transportation of fresh produce to stores in cities and towns. Eggs remained expensive, however, and many poorer people bought dried eggs or egg powder instead. Walter King's grocery store is here advertising free eggs for its customers - a very appealing offer.
