Advert For Madame LeClaire, Milliner & Dressmaker
Medium: Print on paper
Whilst the poorer members of society had to make their own clothes and patch and mend old clothes middle and upper class women had their clothes individually made for them by dressmakers. This was one of the only industries where it was acceptable for a woman to own and run her own business. Although dressmaking could be very profitable for the proprietor, the women who sewed the gowns were paid very badly for their work. These women worked long hours, for very low pay.
