This is an advertisement for Clayton & Co., alcohol distillers from Burton on Trent. This particular region became famous for its production of pale, light ales. India Pale Ales were originally brewed to send out to troops stationed in India during the mid 1800s. There was no way of refrigerating the alcohol do the ales were high in alcohol content and high in hops to preserve them on their long journey. Pale ales became popular with the middle classes at the end of the century because they looked more attractive than porter when presented in the new and fashionable clear glass containers (pint glasses!).
