Tea was introduced to Britain in the 1650s by explorer and merchant Thomas Garway. It was initially heavily taxed and for a long time was the preserve of importers, customs men, and the wealthy. By the 19th century these taxes had been relaxed, and East India Company's monopoly on its supply was gone. Many companies began to bring tea to England and feverish competition reduced prices significantly. This enabled the working classes to buy tea for the first time.
