In the 19th century, historic import duties on coffee and tea were repealed, making them affordable alternatives to alcohol. As such, the clientele of coffee houses comprised skilled workers, merchants and some professionals.

The Temperance Movement, which advocated abstinence from alcohol and gambling, supported and even ran some coffee houses.
