Advert for P Hay, dyeing & cleaning works
Printer: T Evans & Co
Medium: Print on paper
Laundry works such as P Hall’s also dyed clothes for customers. Because new clothes were expensive for poorer families during the Victorian era, dyeing was used as a means of rejuvenating old and worn clothing. It was especially useful on dark, otherwise irremovable stains on still-wearable clothes. Synthetic dyes were developed during this period and this meant that a range of new and vibrant colours were available for the first time.
