While it had always been possible in London to purchase hot food from hawkers on streets, or snacks from butchers shops, dining out in restaurants was a very modern idea in Victorian Britain. Restaurants such as the Peninsular were inspired by public dining rooms in continental Europe, and a great many opened in British cities in the mid- to late-19th century.
