Grocers filled the windows of their shops with interesting and appealing goods to entice potential customers. Displays constantly changed throughout the day as produce was sold and many grocers used exotic fruit and vegetables such as yams, bananas, mangoes and passionfruits to add a continental feel to their displays. It was a very important job to dress a window and it was usually the responsibility of the grocer himself or his chief assistant. Prices had to be displayed clearly and the goods had to appeal to any passers by.
