Rooke's 'Excelsior' flash lamp was designed to give photographers extra lighting for their invariably staged shots. The term photography was coined by scientist John Herschel in 1839; it joins the Greek words for light ("photos") and drawing ("graphein"). Technological developments continued in photography throughout the century and by its end there a great many professional photographers. It also became fashionable to have photographic, rather than painted, portraits in the home and to collect card-sized photos in an album.
