Advert for Spratt's Animal Food
Medium: Print on paper
James Spratt initially came from Ohio, America to London as a lightning-conductor salesman. The sight of homeless and malnourished dogs prowling the London docklands shocked him, but he principally noticed that they were there to scavenge the salty sea biscuits dropped by sailors. Thus he established a business in Holborn manufacturing and selling 'cakes' that were notably more nutritious, containing wheat, beetroot and other vegetables bound together with beef blood.
As can be seen from the list on this leaflet his company expanded into producing feed for many other animals.
