This leaflet advertises a joint venture by Smith's wine store and GJ Gissing's grocery. Gissing is offering his customers a Christmas savings club, in which they could deposit money in order to afford a good bottle of wine or brandy for the holidays. The wine would be supplied by Sidney Smith.

Goose was the cheapest poultry available in the 19th century, a far cry from the medieval period when it was the preserve of the very wealthy. The upper classes now preferred turkey.
