A charitable foundation, the NSPCC was established by the Reverend Benjamin Waugh to protect children from abuse. Waugh had worked as a Congregational Minister in the slums of the London's East End and had witnessed the cruelty and deprivation to which children were exposed there on a daily basis. At this time animals were protected from abuse by legislation, but not children. Waugh campaigned to bring this fact to people’s attention and founded the society in 1884.
