Food shortages were common in the 19th century. Social reformers and Christian churches began to set up soup kitchens, feeding the poor for free. Most of the soup distributed in this manner was watery, thin gruel, but companies such as this made a point of including (or at least advertising) their product's wholesome ingredients.
